(Puerto Rico).- The current Executive Order of the governor, Wanda Vázquez Garced that seeks to fight against the coronavirus COVID-19 maintains the closure of casinos, but the industry insists that they made large investments to safeguard the health of customers and employees, and alleges that the closure of the gambling venues is not justified.

Sigfrido de Jesús, Casino del Mar General Manager in La Concha Resort, wrote in a press release that, as part of the protocols implemented, "each casino invested an average of $125,000 in cleaning and disinfection measures."
The also pointed that each casino ellaborated a plan to respond in case of any positive COVID-19 case. On a second reopening phase communicated by the governor, casino operation was allowed at the beginning of July, subject to the ellaboration of a plan and a six-feet social distance.
"Despite the considerable expense, we saw it as a socially responsible investment in the health and safety of our employees, customers and suppliers, which in turn contributes to the sustainability of the industry. However, since March 16, when the emergency began, we have only been able to operate for two weeks," added de Jesús.
However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends games available virtually. In fact, they list activities with slot machines and no-dealer gaming equipment as "higher risk."
